06 FEBRUARY SAYAJIRAO GAEKWAD III (1863 to 1939)
Born on 11 March 1863, Sayajirao Gaekwad III was the Maharaja of Baroda state from 1875 to 1939. He belonged to the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas, which ruled most of present-day Gujarat. Sayajirao ascended the throne during a period when British rule was at its peak. He turned his attention towards civil society, and he worked on bringing about progressive reforms in the education sector, social sector, and even in the field of creative arts. Museums, schools, colleges, railways, waterworks, and commercial banks were established and prospered under his regime. Sayajirao Gaekwad towered over all the other Maharajas and Princes who owed their allegiance to the Crown. He passed away on 06 February 1939.
