28 September – Lata Mangeshkar
Born this day in the year 1929, Lata Mangeshkar is one of India’s best known and most respected playback singers. A prolific singer, she has recorded songs not only in Hindi but also in 36 other languages.
In 1963 against the backdrop of the war with China, Lata sang “Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logon” a patriotic song that is still sung and played today.
A grateful country has bestowed multiple honours on Lata including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan and the highest civilian honour in India, the Bharat Ratna. She has also been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
