Situated along the Hooghly, Kolkata is the state capital of West Bengal. Formerly known as Calcutta, the city was founded in the late 17th century, with the coming of the British East India Company. The city is dotted with heritage structures that continue to tell tales of its historic past. Kolkata has also been the nucleus of Bengali cuisine, literature, cinema, and drama.

The city of Kolkata has its own charm, defined by its people, culture, and traditions. Many communities that travelled from different regions brought with them their culinary traditions and rituals, making Kolkata their new home.

historic cities history

Before the advent of the British, present-day Kolkata was part of three villages - Sutanuti, Kalikata and Gobindapur. Job Charnock, often referred to as the Founder of Calcutta, saw the potential of the three villages. The English East India Company acquired the rights of these villages from a prominent zamindar (landlord), Sabarna Raychoudhari. Soon, the British took control and established their power.

Take a look at the map. North Kolkata, formerly known as the ‘Black Town,' was where the native Bengalis resided in their mansions. Whereas the area around Fort William, known as the 'White Town,' was inhabited by the European population of the city.
