Warfare has profoundly shaped the course of Indian history. The subcontinent has witnessed landmark battles that not only altered its destiny but also left a lasting impact on the wider world.
Across two millennia, these twelve battles mark defining shifts in Indian history. The Battle of Kalinga (c. 260 BCE) expanded the Mauryan Empire but also transformed Aśoka’s outlook, leading him to embrace and spread Buddhism. The Battle of Hydaspes (326 BCE) was Alexander’s most difficult campaign, introducing India to Hellenistic influences. The Second Battle of Tarain (1192) led to the fall of Rajput power and opened the gates for the Turks to set up a kingdom in India. The First Battle of Panipat (1526) established the Mughal Empire after toppling the Lodi dynasty. The Battle of Talikota (1565) broke the dominance of Vijayanagara, shifting power in the Deccan. The Battle of Itakhuli (1682) secured Ahom independence and ended Mughal ambitions in Northeast India. The Battle of Plassey (1757) marked the East India Company’s rise to political power. The Battle of Wandiwash (1760) decisively ended French influence in India. The Battle of Buxar (1764) gave the British full revenue rights in eastern India. The Battle of Delhi (1803) during the second Anglo-Maratha War broke Maratha hegemony in India and triggered their decline. Finally, the Siege of Seringapatam (1799) ended Tipu Sultan’s resistance to colonial rule.
