Description: Gharat is a traditional mechanical device for grinding wheat in other grains. This traditional object is mostly funnel in the hilly region of Western India, where it is automatically runs through the flow of water from the Himalayan hills. A complete set of Gharat has many parts made of stones & wood. Among important parts of the Gharat is Paniyal which is a long wooden cannel through which the water is diverted to “Jaleri”. “Jaleri” is a circular wooden aperture filled with bladed wings. ‘Ridi’ is a conical shaped hollowed container with a narrow cannel fitted on lower portion. Finally “Ghat” and “Tali” are two similar circular stone structures, among which the “Tali” is permanently fixed on the ground and the ‘Ghat’ is movably fitted on “Tali”. (Functioning) For operation of Gharat a particular height is required where the water reservoir is made. The water from this reservoir is allowed to flow through ‘Paniyal’ to the “Jaleri”. When the water falls on the wings the ‘Jaleri’ moves. The move of the ‘Jaleri’ in forced through iron rod to rotate the ‘Ghat’ and the continuous rotation of Ghat grind the grains Now-a-days this technology be observed at the border of extinction.
