KAREEN- A Traditional Irrigation Equipment, Bihar

Description: ‘Kareen’ traditional irrigation equipment collected from Madhubani district of Bihar. A wooden log is hollowed and shaped as a boat which frontal portion usually kept open and narrow where as the rear portion is broad and closed. For operation it is hanged through the Chhepati – a long bamboo which is tied with three bamboo poles. On one end of Chhepati some weighing is tied which help Kareen to play up and down. For irrigation it is placed on the pond, Small River, canals etc. The rear portion of the Kareen is deeped into the water by pressure of foot. As the result the hollowed portion of Kareen is filled up with water and on pulling it upward the water followed on the Chanel of the field. It is still in practice for irrigation.
