Many brave female freedom fighters who participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement were determined to overthrow the yoke of colonialism from India once and for all. Among these courageous personalities, Shrimati Chandravati Devi (from Muzaffarpur, Bihar) stands out for her admirable determination and resolve.
Shrimati Chandravati Devi belonged to a family with strong patriotic inclinations. Along with her husband, Jagdish Narain Verma, Chandravati Devi devoted herself wholeheartedly to the national struggle, participating in processions and picketing while touring different parts of Bihar to mobilise people to join the fight for freedom. She travelled to places such as Purnea and Araria to motivate the masses to continue the anti-British struggle relentlessly. Her determination and patriotic resolve even caught the attention of the British authorities in the region. The District Magistrate of Purnea and the Sub-Divisional Officer of Araria referred to her visits to the respective districts as “providing impetus to the movement,” and colonial records testify that picketing and boycott activities gained momentum in all the regions she visited.
Shrimati Chandravati Devi was truly an apostle of patriotism in Bihar, and her selfless commitment to the liberation of the motherland played a crucial role in fuelling the national movement.
