Description:

The video is a sarangi performance of Pandit Ram Narayan (1927- ). Pandit Ram Narayan is a Hindustani classical musician who plays the bowed instrument, the sarangi. He is credited with popularizing the sarangi as a solo classical instrument. He was born in 1927 in Amber village in Rajasthan. His family came from a long line of court musicians at Udaipur. He received his early training from his father. He learnt dhrupad by a very young age and was taught the khayal by Madhav Prasad, a singer from Lucknow. He later received training on ragas from the khayal singer Abdul Wahid Khan in Lahore. Although his style is considered to be orthodox, his choice of solo instrument and music training has been unconventional. He brought the background instrument, sarangi to the forefront of Hindustani classical music.
