Taus is a stringed instrument made of rosewood, metal, and horsehair. Used in religious ceremonies, this instrument is found in various parts of North India. Majorly used by classical musicians of Northern India. Also used in Gurbani.



TAUS in North India

Material: Rosewood, metal, horsehair

A peacock shaped bowed instrument, made of rosewood. Wooden resonator and shaft made separately and later joined together. One bridge, over which four main playing strings pass and pass through; twenty five sympathetic strings nineteen metallic frets. Played with a bow made of horsehair, by right hand, while the left hand fingers stop the strings on frets. Used by classical musicians of Northern India. Also used in Gurbani.
