Thanthi Panai is a stringed instrument made of clay, metal, and parchment. This tribal instrument is found in Tamil Nadu. Majorly used by hill tribes and ‘Mallas’ of Tamilnadu.

A pitcher of baked clay with skin covered opening. A steel string passed through the centre of the skin and taken out through the hole at the bottom and tied to a peg on a bird shaped wooden peg holder. Placed on the lap, the head is struck by the left hand while right hand fingers pluck the string. A composite instrument. Used by hill tribes and ‘Mallas’ of Tamilnadu.
