No tax struggles in Nellore

With the nationwide advent of the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930, the District Congress Committee of Nellore organized volunteers around the Gandhi Ashram in Pallipadu. These volunteers traveled across the district and inspired the people to break the salt laws. The salt laws were broken in several places in the district. The arrest of Nationalist leader MK Gandhi and the repressive measures of the colonial administration were protested by the people of Nellore through mass resignation and civil disobedience. The revenue officers or Karanam of Kotapolur, Manne, Muttur, Nallavari, Kandriga, and Yellayapalem resigned from the posts as a mark of protest. Even the village servants or vettis resigned to register their opposition to the British Raj. As the movement gained force in the district, the people of the district showed support for the non-payment of oppressive land taxes imposed by the British administration. The villagers of the Alaganipadu of Gudur taluk refused the payment of the unjust land taxes. This directly threatened the roots of the British administration. The authorities quickly responded with heavy-handed measures and arrests of prominent local leaders. Despite the adversities, the people of the Nellore district were successful in resisting the oppression of the British government and propagating the ideal of an independent India.
