M. S. Gurupadaswamy

M.S. Gurupadaswamy was a journalist, Indian independence activist, and former Member of Parliament. He was born on 7th August 1922 in the Mysore district of present-day Karnataka. M.S. Gurupadaswamy joined the freedom struggle when he was a teenager. In 1942, when Gandhiji gave the call for the British to Quit India, he left his studies and joined the national struggle. As an active member of the All India Students Federation, he participated in political rallies and processions, and also engaged in constructive activities to promote the uplift of the rural poor. His participation in Gandhian constructive activities gave him deep insight into the problems plaguing the countryside. He later became a compatriot of prominent leaders such as Acharya Narendra Deva, J.B. Kripalani, and Jayaprakash Narayan, with whom he undertook many social works for rural development. Gurupadaswamy was someone who devoted his life to the upliftment of the downtrodden. He worked for the abolition of the begar, betterment of the conditions of the laborers employed in the Mysore silk industry, and spoke for the uplift of the Harijan population. He also served as the editor of the famous nationalist journal, The Prajamata. Gurupadaswamy was a committed patriot and social activist. He continued to serve the nation in different capacities till his demise.
