They further argued that since Bengal was where British rule was first established in India and political aspirations at the time were high, such an account detailing the present and past conditions of Bengal was necessary. It also gives a description of Bengal’s physical characteristics, products, Hindu period, Mohammedan era, antiquarian relics, classification and distribution of the people, religious beliefs and festivals, British rule and its effects, and the progress of education.
